Modelling avocado-driven deforestation in Michoacán, Mexico

چکیده
Abstract As demand for avocado climbs, production in Michoacán—Mexico’s biggest growing region—expands into new places. We use a spatial probit model to project the geographic distribution of likely future expansion and analyze those results determine (a) threats specific forest types (b) how is shifting spatially under current climate scenarios. Our suggest that Michoacán strongly driven by distance existing agriculture, roads, localities, as well dwindling availability Andosol soils. ensues, it presents risk loss across various types, with pine-oak forest, mesophilic montane oyamel fir being particular concern. Moreover, our will occupy wider ranges terms temperature, precipitation, slope steepness soil. The predicts change alter plantings, expanding at lower higher elevations. Forest threatens ecosystem degradation, crop footprint could lead orchard establishment forests host high diversity native oaks charismatic species, including monarch butterfly.

Annotated checklist of the coastal ichthyofauna from Michoacán State, Mexico
This study is the first to complete an intensive and comprehensive list of the ichthyofauna of nearly all ecosystems of the Michoacán coast, Mexico. The resulting systematic checklist, supplemented with information from the literature and scientific collections, comprises 440 species belonging to two classes, 31 orders, 104 families, and 264 genera. The families with the highest number of speci...
متن کاملTEK, local perceptions of risk, and diversity of management practices of Agave inaequidens in Michoacán, Mexico
BACKGROUND Mescal production is the main economic activity associated to agaves in Mexico, which involves 53 species mostly harvested from forests. The increasing mescal demand has influenced risk in both agave populations and mescal production, but other social and ecological factors also intervene. We hypothesized that the greater the risk the greater the complexity of management responses; o...
متن کاملTitle : A Tale of Two Communities : Explaining Deforestation in Mexico
Abstract: Explaining land use change in Mexico requires understanding the behavior of the local institutions involved. We develop two theories to explain deforestation in communities with and without forestry projects, where the former involves a process of side payments to non-members of the community and the latter of partial cooperation among community members. Data collected in 2002 combine...
متن کاملDiversity and distribution of Odonata (Insecta) larvae along an altitudinal gradient in Coalcomán mountains, Michoacán, Mexico.
Evaluating components of landscape diversity is essential for the implementation of efficient conservation strategies. We evaluated the diversity of Odonata larval assemblages from the Coalcomán mountains (CM), Michoacán, Mexico, and related it to local (site-level) habitat variables. Larvae were collected from shores, riffles and pools in five streams, counted and identified to species, twice ...
متن کاملOrganochlorine pollutants and stable isotopes in resident and migrant passerine birds from northwest Michoacán, Mexico.
Although concentrations of organochlorine compounds (OCs) in birds from most of the United States and Canada have decreased over the last 30 years, there is still concern that migrant birds might be exposed to elevated concentrations of OCs during migration in Latin America. The Lerma-Chapala Basin in west-central Mexico is an important migration corridor and wintering area for many species. Th...
